☀️ august in nyc.

there's something bittersweet about august in new york.

the city is still buzzing with summer energy, but you can feel the seasons beginning to shift. the sunsets come a little earlier, the evenings are just a little softer, and everyone seems determined to squeeze every last drop out of summer.

personally? i kind of love it.

august is the month for saying yes to rooftop dinners, lingering in bookstores a little longer, catching an outdoor movie, or taking the ferry somewhere just because you can.

if you're looking for the best things to do, see, and experience this month, here's everything i'd add to your calendar.

🎾 the U.S. Open returns to Queens:

late august means one thing in New York: the U.S. Open is back at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows. The tournament begins in the final week of the month and brings two weeks of world-class tennis, celebrity sightings, and unmistakable late-summer energy.

even if you're not a huge tennis fan, the atmosphere around the grounds is worth experiencing.

💡 ally tip:
make a full day of it. explore Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, grab dinner in Flushing afterward, and discover one of the city's best food neighborhoods.

🍽️ NYC Restaurant Week:

one of my favorite reasons to explore somewhere new.

NYC Restaurant Week continues through the first half of August, with hundreds of restaurants across all five boroughs offering special prix fixe menus. It's one of the easiest ways to finally try that restaurant you've had saved for months.

my advice?

skip the obvious choice.

pick somewhere you've never been, order dessert, and let dinner become the plan instead of rushing to the next thing.

🎬 outdoor movies under the skyline:

there's just something about watching a movie outside in new york.

throughout august you'll find free film screenings in parks across the city, from Brooklyn Bridge Park to Bryant Park and neighborhood greenspaces. Bring a blanket, pick up takeout on the way, and settle in before the sun goes down.

these are the kinds of evenings that remind me why i never get tired of this city.

🌇 rooftop season isn't over yet:

if you've been waiting to book that rooftop reservation...

this is your sign.

august evenings somehow hit differently.

whether it's drinks after work, a birthday dinner, or simply watching the skyline change colors, this is one of the last months where rooftop season feels effortless.

don't overthink it.

pick somewhere with a view and stay until the lights come on.

🎶 music, festivals & summer nights:

august is packed with outdoor performances, neighborhood festivals, and live music happening all over the city. Lincoln Center's Summer for the City programming continues, while parks and waterfront venues keep the summer soundtrack going with concerts and cultural events.

one of my favorite ways to experience new york is simply following the music.

sometimes you'll stumble across a concert you didn't even know was happening.

those are usually the best nights.

🛍️ neighborhood days:

one thing i've been trying to do more lately is stop chasing landmarks and start enjoying neighborhoods.

august is perfect for that.

spend an afternoon:

  • browsing independent bookstores

  • finding a new coffee shop

  • wandering the west village without a destination

  • exploring greenpoint or fort greene

  • taking the ferry to governors island

  • people-watching from a shady park bench

not every day needs a packed itinerary.

sometimes the city gives you enough just by slowing down.

🌊 take advantage of summer while it's here:

there's still plenty of time for:

  • beach days at Coney Island or Rockaway Beach

  • sunset ferry rides

  • picnics in Central Park or Prospect Park

  • Smorgasburg weekends

  • walks along the Hudson River Greenway

  • lazy afternoons reading outside instead of inside

summer has a funny way of disappearing before you realize it's happening.

don't rush through it.

📚 my august reminder:

august always reminds me that not every season has to end dramatically.

sometimes change is quiet.

it's reading outside instead of scrolling.

ordering dessert because it's still warm enough to eat it outside.

walking home instead of calling a cab.

staying just a little longer.

that's the kind of month i'm hoping to have.

☀️ ally's perfect august day:

morning
coffee, a farmers market, and a bookstore stop

afternoon
Restaurant Week lunch or an afternoon museum to escape the heat

golden hour
ferry ride or Governors Island

evening
outdoor movie, rooftop dinner, or live music

night
a slow walk home while summer is still hanging on

🤍 final thoughts:

august isn't about checking things off a list.

it's about noticing the little moments that make new york feel like home.

the warm subway platforms.

the music drifting through washington square park.

the skyline glowing after sunset.

the way the city seems to slow down—just a little—before fall arrives.

so if you're looking for a sign to enjoy what's left of summer, this is it.

i'll see you out there.

talk soon 🕊️
