Outfits I Wear on Repeat in Harlem.
There are some outfits in my closet that I wear once, love, and then somehow forget about. And then there are the outfits I wear all. the. time.
You know the ones. The outfits that make getting dressed easy because you already know they work. The ones you reach for when you're running out for coffee, heading downtown, meeting a friend, spending the afternoon wandering around New York, or just want to feel a little more put together without actually putting that much effort in.
Living in Harlem has definitely shaped the way I dress. My wardrobe has to work for real life: walking everywhere, dealing with unpredictable weather, hopping on the subway, running errands, grabbing a coffee, and occasionally going somewhere that requires me to look like I had an actual plan.
So, rather than constantly reinventing my wardrobe, I've been leaning into the outfits I know I love.
Here are the Harlem outfits I wear on repeat.
The Jeans + Easy Top Combo
If there is one outfit formula I can always count on, it's a great pair of jeans with a simple top.
This is probably my most-worn combination because it somehow manages to feel casual and pulled together at the same time. Depending on the season, I'll swap in a tank, fitted tee, button-down, sweater, or cardigan.
The trick is really in the accessories. Add a cute pair of flats or sneakers, a structured bag, some sunglasses, and suddenly the outfit feels intentional instead of like I just threw on jeans.
And honestly? Sometimes I did just throw on jeans.
That's the beauty of it.
Shop my version: I keep a few favorite pairs of jeans in rotation and rely on simple tops that can easily be dressed up or down. You can find some of my current wardrobe favorites over on my ShopMy storefront.
The Midi Skirt + Tee:
I love an outfit that makes me feel feminine without feeling overly dressed.
Enter: the midi skirt and tee.
There's something about pairing a more polished skirt with a very basic T-shirt that makes the whole thing feel effortless. It's especially good for those days when I'm doing a little more than just running errands but don't necessarily want to wear jeans.
I'll usually add sandals or sneakers, a crossbody bag, and a few pieces of jewelry.
This is also one of those outfits that transitions really well. Coffee in the morning? Fine. Lunch with a friend? Cute. Walking around the city all afternoon? Still comfortable. Dinner later? Throw on a jacket, and you're good.
Basically, it does the most while looking like you didn't try too hard.
The All-Black Outfit:
New York women understand this one.
When I have absolutely no idea what I want to wear, I wear black.
An all-black outfit is one of my favorite little fashion cheats because it immediately looks intentional. Black jeans or trousers, a black top, black shoes — done.
But I like to add different textures so it doesn't feel too flat. Maybe it's denim with a knit top, cotton with leather accessories, or a soft sweater with a structured bag.
And yes, living in New York means I will absolutely be wearing black while carrying a coffee.
It's practically part of the uniform.
The Sundress + Sneakers:
There is something about a sundress and sneakers that just feels like summer in New York.
Especially in Harlem.
I'll throw on an easy dress, add my everyday sneakers, grab my bag, and head out the door. It's comfortable enough for walking but still feels like I actually got dressed.
This is one of my favorite outfits for those slow summer days when I don't really have a strict itinerary. Maybe I'm grabbing coffee, stopping into a store, walking around the neighborhood, or meeting someone for lunch.
The sneakers keep the dress from feeling too precious, which is important because I am not interested in sacrificing comfort just to look cute.
Cute and comfortable, please.
The Trousers + Tank Formula:
When I want to look a little more polished, this is usually where I land.
A pair of relaxed trousers with a simple tank or fitted top is such an easy combination. It's minimal without being boring, and you can completely change the personality of the outfit depending on the shoes and accessories.
For a casual day, I'll wear sneakers. For something a little nicer, I'll switch to flats or sandals and add a structured bag.
This is also one of those outfits that makes me feel like I have my life together — even if I absolutely do not.
And sometimes that's enough.
The Denim-on-Denim Moment:
I know denim-on-denim can feel a little intimidating, but I actually love it.
The easiest way I've found to wear it is to keep the pieces slightly different in color or texture. Think lighter denim on top with darker jeans, or a denim jacket over a simple white tank and jeans.
It feels very New York without trying too hard.
I'll usually keep everything else simple: sneakers, a shoulder bag, sunglasses, and minimal jewelry.
It's one of those outfits that looks better the less you overthink it.
The Leggings + Oversized Everything Outfit:
Let's be honest: not every day is a fashion day.
Sometimes I'm going to get coffee. Sometimes I'm running errands. Sometimes I want to walk around the neighborhood for an hour and absolutely do not want to think about what I'm wearing.
Those are leggings days.
But I still like to make the outfit feel somewhat intentional, so I'll pair leggings with an oversized button-down, sweatshirt, sweater, or jacket. Add sneakers, a baseball cap or sunglasses, and a good tote bag and I'm ready to go.
This is very much my "I'm comfortable, but I still live in New York City" outfit.
The Simple Dress + Layered Jacket:
A simple dress is another wardrobe MVP for me.
I'll wear a basic dress on its own when it's warm, then add a denim jacket, cardigan, blazer, or lightweight jacket when I want a little more structure.
The layering is what makes this outfit so useful for New York because you never quite know what you're going to encounter. One minute you're sweating on the sidewalk and the next you're freezing somewhere indoors.
A jacket also makes the same dress feel completely different from one wear to the next.
And that is exactly what I want from my wardrobe.
The "I'm Going Downtown" Outfit:
There is definitely a difference between my Harlem neighborhood outfit and my I'm-going-downtown-today outfit.
Not necessarily a huge difference — but enough that I feel a little more polished.
Usually, this means jeans or trousers, a cute top, a jacket, and a pair of shoes that can survive some walking. I'll add sunglasses, my everyday jewelry, and a bag that feels a little more elevated.
Because let's be real: sometimes the outfit is just for me.
There's something about getting dressed up a little before heading downtown that makes an ordinary day feel more special.
And I'm very much a believer in making ordinary days feel special.
The Outfit I Wear When I "Have Nothing to Wear":
We all have one.
Mine usually ends up being some combination of jeans, a simple top, a cardigan or jacket, sneakers, and my favorite bag.
It's the outfit I reach for when I've stood in front of my closet for ten minutes and somehow decided that I own absolutely nothing.
And every time, I put it on and think:
"Oh. This is cute. Why was I making this so difficult?"
I think that's actually the biggest lesson I've learned from figuring out my personal style in my 30s.
I don't need more clothes.
I need to remember how much I already love the clothes I have.
My Real-Life NYC Uniform:
If you looked at my wardrobe closely, you'd probably notice that I repeat a lot of the same pieces.
And I'm okay with that.
I actually want a wardrobe where things get worn. I want my favorite jeans to have a little history. I want to reach for the same sneakers because I know they're comfortable. I want a cardigan that has seen countless coffee runs.
Especially living in New York, my clothes have to work for my actual life.
They have to survive walking. They have to work on the subway. They have to make sense for a coffee run that somehow turns into three hours of wandering around the city. They have to be comfortable enough for everyday life but cute enough that I still feel like myself.
That's why these are the outfits I wear on repeat in Harlem.
They're simple. They're comfortable. They're very me.
And honestly, I think that's what personal style is supposed to be.
Not constantly buying something new because you feel like you have nothing to wear.
Not trying to recreate every trend you see online.
Just finding the combinations that make you feel really, really good — and then wearing the heck out of them.
Because if you ask me, repeating an outfit isn't boring.
It's knowing what works.
