the september edit.

there's something about september in new york city that makes me want to get dressed again.

august is all about surviving the heat and squeezing every last bit of summer out of the city. september feels different. suddenly the mornings are a little cooler, the sidewalks feel a little busier, and everyone seems to be returning to their routines.

and honestly? i love it.

september is when my wardrobe starts finding its shape again. i'm reaching for jeans instead of shorts, light jackets instead of barely-there layers, and shoes that can actually handle a full day of walking around the city.

but i'm not ready for fall fall just yet.

the best part of september fashion is that it's still a little bit summer and a little bit autumn. you can wear your favorite warm-weather pieces while introducing deeper colors, richer textures, and the first layers of the season.

for this month's edit, i'm leaning into polished NYC minimalism, dark denim, scarves, structured jackets, flat shoes, and richer fall colors — with just enough personality to keep everything from feeling too serious.

here's what's on my radar for september.

🖤 polished NYC minimalism:

one of the biggest things I'm noticing for fall is a return to simple, intentional dressing.

think clean lines, tonal outfits, beautiful basics, and silhouettes that don't need a million accessories to make them work.

this is very much the "i live here, and i know where i'm going" kind of dressing.

and honestly, that's pretty much the ultimate NYC wardrobe goal.

i'm thinking black trousers with a fitted knit, a simple jacket over jeans, or a monochromatic outfit finished with a great bag.

👖 dark denim is back:

if you've been living in lighter denim all summer, september is the perfect excuse to switch things up.

deep indigo, dark rinse, black denim, and more structured silhouettes are taking over for fall. Current trend reporting specifically points toward dark-wash and more tailored denim replacing some of the looser, lighter summer styles.

i especially love dark denim with a simple white tee or sweater because it immediately makes an outfit feel more polished without actually requiring more effort.

🧣 scarves are having a moment:

i am very happy about this one.

scarves are back as more than just something you throw around your neck when it's cold. they're becoming part of the outfit itself — draped over the shoulders, tied around your neck, wrapped around a bag, or styled with a simple jacket.

the Fall 2026 street-style reports have been particularly strong on this styling trick.

and because september doesn't require a giant winter scarf yet, this is actually the perfect month to experiment.

J.Crew Striped Wool-Cashmere Blend Bandana

i'd style one with dark denim, a simple tank, ballet flats, and a lightweight jacket for an easy downtown look.

🥿 flats over everything:

september is when i'm officially ready to put away some of my summer sandals and start wearing real shoes again.

but i'm not jumping straight into boots.

ballet flats, loafers, Mary Janes, and other low-profile shoes are having a major moment for fall. Fall 2026 reporting highlights flat footwear as one of the season's key directions, while Shopbop's current assortment is already reflecting the continued popularity of ballet flats and loafers.

and for NYC? i'm always going to support a cute shoe that can survive a subway platform and several thousand steps.

shop the trend:

🍷 richer colors:

september doesn't mean everything suddenly has to be brown, beige, and black.

actually, Fall 2026 is bringing a much more interesting color palette. Pantone's New York Fashion Week forecast includes shades like Red Mahogany, Neptune Green, Acacia yellow, Foxglove, and Burnt Olive, which means there is plenty of room for color beyond the traditional fall neutrals.

i'm especially drawn to deep reds and burgundy this time of year because they feel dramatic without being difficult to wear.

a burgundy cardigan, bag, shoe, or even lipstick can make a very simple outfit feel completely different.

🍂 lightweight jackets for that in-between weather:

this might be the most important september trend of all: the jacket you can actually take off.

NYC weather in September is famously indecisive, so i'm looking for lightweight outerwear that works over a tank in the afternoon but doesn't feel ridiculous when the temperature drops at night.

funnel-neck jackets are especially strong for fall 2026, and they're an easy way to make a basic jeans-and-tee outfit feel much more current.

shop the trend:

september style is my favorite kind of style because it doesn't ask you to completely change your wardrobe overnight.

it's about taking what you already love and giving it a new context.

a summer tank with dark denim. a scarf over a simple jacket. ballet flats instead of sandals. a deeper shade of red instead of your usual neutral. the first lightweight jacket of the season thrown over literally everything.

it's those little changes that make a wardrobe feel fresh again.

and as someone who spends her days living, working, walking, and generally doing life in new york city, that's really what i want from my clothes.

i want things that feel like me, but just a little more polished for the season ahead.

september, i'm ready for you.
